Pentagon tech board appointee allegedly called Mamdani 'Islamist'

Pentagon tech board appointee allegedly called Mamdani 'Islamist'

The Defense Department has appointed 33 new members to its recently established Science, Technology and Innovation Board (STIB), but one selection is already drawing controversy. The appointee, whose name has not been widely released, is alleged to have referred to fellow board member Zia Muddin Mamdani as an "Islamist" during internal discussions. Mamdani, a prominent technology executive and former Obama administration official, has served on the board since its creation last year.

The accusation surfaced in a complaint filed by an unnamed whistleblower, who claims the appointee made the remark in a private meeting about board diversity and security clearances. The term "Islamist" is often used to describe political movements rooted in Islamic extremism, a label that Mamdani's supporters say is inaccurate and defamatory. Mamdani has not publicly commented on the allegation, but sources close to him say he is "deeply offended" by the characterization.

The Pentagon has not officially responded to the complaint, but a spokesperson said the department takes all allegations of bias seriously. The STIB was established to advise the Defense Department on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. Critics argue the appointment undermines the board's credibility and raises questions about the vetting process for its members. The board's first official meeting is scheduled for next month, where the controversy is expected to be a topic of discussion.
