The Utah Department of Transportation is deploying new technology to ensure its snowplows can move efficiently and safely during winter storms. The system, known as Connected Vehicle technology, allows plows to communicate directly with traffic signals, requesting and receiving extended green lights as they approach key intersections.
This initiative aims to keep major routes clear and improve safety for both plow operators and the public. By reducing the time plows spend idling at red lights, the technology increases the time they spend actively clearing snow and ice from roadways. This leads to faster treatment of more miles of road during critical storm events.
The technology does not create a constant green wave for plows; it intelligently adjusts signal timing only when a plow is approaching and conditions warrant it, minimizing disruption to cross traffic. The system is being activated on designated snowplow routes along high-priority corridors across the Wasatch Front, including areas in Salt Lake and Utah counties.
Officials emphasize that this advancement is a significant step toward enhancing winter road maintenance. By improving plow efficiency, the technology directly contributes to safer travel conditions, helping motorists reach their destinations more reliably during inclement weather. The deployment is part of a broader effort to integrate intelligent transportation systems across the state.
