False claims about grocery-store produce spark backlash against food-saving technology

A wave of misinformation is threatening to derail a promising food-saving technology, as false claims about grocery-store produce have ignited public backlash. The technology, which uses specialized coatings or treatments to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables, was designed to combat the massive global problem of food waste. However, recent social media posts have falsely alleged that these treatments are harmful chemicals that mask spoilage or trick consumers into buying old produce.

Industry experts say the backlash is based on a misunderstanding of how the technology works. "The problem is that we need to get the food to the people who need it," said a spokesperson for a food-research nonprofit. "These coatings are often made from natural plant extracts or waxes that are already approved as safe. They simply slow down the ripening process, allowing produce to travel longer distances without rotting."

The controversy has led some grocery chains to reconsider adopting the technology, despite evidence that it could reduce the 30 to 40 percent of food that goes to waste each year. Critics argue that the real issue is not the technology itself, but a lack of transparency. They want clearer labeling so shoppers know when a product has been treated. Without that, they fear the false claims will continue to spread, undermining efforts to feed more people with less waste.
