Three mechanical engineering students from Alvernia University have transformed a classroom concept into a promising healthcare tool, earning a provisional patent and top honors at a major regional competition. The team took first place in the collegiate division of the 24th Annual tecBRIDGE Business Plan Competition in Northeast Pennsylvania for their new nursing education technology.
The students were awarded $10,000 in cash, along with $100,000 worth of in-kind services to help develop their invention further. The technology, which started as a project in one of their engineering courses, is designed to improve the way nursing students practice clinical skills. While the team has not released full technical details, the patent-pending device aims to address a gap in hands-on training, potentially making simulations more realistic and effective.
The competition win provides the students with critical resources to move from prototype to a more market-ready product. The in-kind services include legal, accounting, and business development support, which will help them navigate the early stages of launching a startup. For the students, the victory validates the hard work they put into bridging engineering and healthcare, showing that ideas born in a university lab can have a real-world impact on medical education.
